Benedicte Bull

Benedicte Bull is associate professor at the Centre for Development and the Environment (SUM), University of Oslo, and director of the Norwegian Latin America Research Network (NorLARNet). She holds a PhD in political science from the University of Oslo. She has previously worked as a consultant for, among other institutions, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Inter-American Development Bank. Her research has focused on the relationship between economic elites and state institutions in Central America and Chile, as well as in international organisations. She has also published extensively on development theory. Among her recent publications are “Latinamerikanske utfordringer” (Latin American challenges), Oslo Høyskoleforlaget, International Development,  Vols I-IV (Sage, 2010, with Morten Bøås). She was the conference rapporteur.

Mexico and the northern triangle of Central America (Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador) are currently experiencing a wave of violence with the dimensions of a humanitarian catastrophe. The apparent cause is the spread of the illegal economy, including drug smuggling, human trafficking and trade in weapons. more

Latin America has witnessed a surge in criminal violence during the past decade. In this paper, Benedicte Bull summarises the findings of a 2010 seminar on the international and domestic dimensions of this violence and offers insights into an emerging alternative policy agenda. more
