Elsa Foucraut

Elsa Foucraut holds a master’s degree in Middle East Studies from Sciences Po, Paris, where she studied Gulf Politics. She has worked extensively on economic and political reform in the Gulf region and Egypt. In 2010, she obtained a scholarship from CEFAS (a French research centre for the Gulf region based in Sanaa, Yemen) to conduct research on labour market reform in Bahrain. She had previously worked as a research assistant on UAE defence policy and also spent a year in Cairo learning Arabic.

The current unrest in Bahrain poses a challenge to the ruling family and the political model adopted by King Hamad following a decade of incomplete top-down reforms. In this updated report, Elsa Foucraut believes that the risk of major unrest spreading to other Gulf states remains unlikely. more
