Roland Marchal
is a senior research fellow at the National Centre for Scientific Research based at the Centre for International Studies and Researches (CERI/Sciences-Po, Paris). He was the chief editor of the French academic quarterly Politique africaine
from 2002 to 2006, and has been researching and publishing on the conflicts and politics in Africa for more than 30 years.

The crisis in Mali is not limited to the north, but encompasses important dynamics that affect the whole country. A regional military intervention needs to be planned in terms of dealing with the grievances that allowed Islamist groups to take over the north so quickly rather than a simple military victory.
