Laura Mitchell is a senior adviser at NOREF. Prior to joining NOREF in 2011, Laura worked internationally in both research and international development for almost two decades in the Middle East (Palestine and Syria) and former Soviet Central Asia (Tajikistan), and also in Haiti and the Balkans (Bulgaria, Albania and Serbia). Much of her work has been in conflict zones and has focused on the socio-economic foundations of peace and peacebuilding.

Her research work has focused on women, households/families, children and youth in the Middle East (Palestine and Syria) and the coping and livelihood strategies they employ. Her international development work has involved extensive experience with civil society organisations, capacity building and social movements, as well as corporate social responsibility and mining. She has worked with Save the Children (UK), Oxfam (Canada), FOCUS (U.S.)/Aga Khan Foundation and the planning Alliance/rePlan.  

In terms of her formal education, she has an MA in Sociology and Equity Studies from the OISE/University of Toronto and a BA in Modern Languages (Russian and Arabic) from McGill University in Montreal. She has also taught master’s-level courses and coordinated an international development programme at a Canadian college.
