Liberal Peace in Question: Politics of State and Market Reform in Sri Lanka

María Villellas Ariño , 6 August 2011

Why did liberal peace fail in Sri Lanka? Why did a peace process that gained so much international attention and support and brought the parties to the peace table not succeed? The authors of Liberal Peace in Question , edited by Kristian Stokke and Jayadeva Uyangoda, analyse from a critical perspective why the ingredients of the recipe for liberal peace did not finally lead to the achievement of peace in Sri Lanka. The book points to the strain between the international model and Sri Lankan local politics, and suggests that this model of liberal peace failed to address the social, political and economic exclusion that lies at the core of the conflict.
