Making cooperation attractive: Post-referendum relations between Egypt and the Sudan

This one-day policy workshop includes:

  • Presentation of Norway’s role in the Sudan peace process and regional co-operation with State Secretary Espen Barth Eide , the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • Opening speech by Mariano Aguirre , Director of Noref
  • Keynote speech by Prof. Gunnar M. Sørbø , Chr. Michelsen Institute
  • Concluding address by the Director of PRIO, Kristian Berg Harpviken

The main part of the workshop consists of three panel discussions with senior scholars and policy analysts from the Sudan, Egypt, the United Kingdom and Norway. The topic of the workshop is the challenges facing Egypt and the Sudan (North and South) both before and after the 2011 referendum:

  • What possible scenarios may result from the referendum process?
  • How will the referendum affect security and stability in the region?
  • In which ways will regional Nile politics affect and be affected by the political transition in the Sudan?

This is an open workshop, and the floor will be open for comments and questions during each of the panel sessions.

Lunch and refreshments will be served during the event.

Sudanese officials will present their views on the Southern Sudanese referendum and the future of Sudan. This event will be announced separately.
