Augusto Varas is currently co-vice chair of the Advisory Board of the Latin American Programme (Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars), a member of the FLACSO-Chile Advisory Council, director of InterSocietas Research Group, and chairman of Equitas Foundation (Chile). He holds a PhD in Sociology from Washington University, St. Louis (United States). In 2010 Dr Varas coordinated the NOREF seminar series “Latin America’s new roles in a changing world”. He has been coordinator of the Area of International Relations and Strategic Studies at FLACSO-Chile, Ford Foundation Programme Officer for Governance, Civil Society and National Philanthropy (1994-2000), and Ford Foundation Representative for the Andean Region and Southern Cone (2000-2006). He was adviser at the Ministry General Secretariat of the Presidency of President Patricio Aylwin (1990-1992).
