Kjetil Selvik

is Assistant Professor at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages, University of Oslo. A researcher with Fafo, he is currently working on elite integration and state-society relations in Iran and Kuwait. His research areas include the Middle East, comparative politics, political economy and contemporary Islam. He is the author of Stability and Change in the Modern Middle East, (with Stig Stenslie), I.B. Tauris, 2010, [forthcoming]; Changing Regime Discourse and Reform in Syria, (with Aurora Sottimano), Lynne Rienner, 2008; and recent articles on Syria and Iran in the International Journal of Middle East Studies and World Development.

State crisis in Yemen

Calls for increased Western military support to Yemen to prevent the spread of terrorism are alarming. The cause of Yemen’s political crisis is not the rise of al-Qaeda, but a gradual erosion of state authority. Kjetil Selvik warns that propping up President Saleh’s repressive regime could deepen the country’s crisis. more
