Noref Report 10 - the series Afghanistan-Pakistan updates, May 2009

18 May 2009

The report gives a summary to understand the election process in Afghanistan and discusses the prospects of another term for Karzai’s government in office. Karzai’s nomination of Amin Faheem and Karim Khalili as vice presidential candidates is also discussed. The update goes in considerable details of current US relation with respective Pakistan and Afghan governments in light of the recent trilateral meetings that were held in Washington and summarizes the Taliban responses to the negotiations between them and the Afghan government. For Pakistan, the update gives a corollary of events that led to the ongoing military operation in Swat and its adjoining areas. Furthermore, it also explains in detail the big exodus and resulting humanitarian crisis from this military operation in the region. The report also contains the statements by the Pakistani Taliban given before and in the aftermath of the military operation.
