In the series Afghanistan and Pakistan update

19 April 2009

5 pages.

This update attempts to summarize the pros and cons for the new Pak-Afghan strategy unveiled by the US president Barack Obama for both Pakistan and Afghanistan given the prevailing political, economic and security conditions in the region. The report also contains the reaction from the Afghan Taliban to the offer of reconciliation made by the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton and the bid by the Afghan government to extend the offer of negotiation from Hekmatyar’s group to Jalaluddin Haqqani’s Al-qaeda linked faction.

The report divulges the aftermath of the political storm in Pakistan that brought confrontation between two major parties in Pakistan i.e. the ruling party PPP and the opposition PML-N. Furthermore, it includes the claim of responsibility for the attack on the Lahore police training camp by the TTP leader Beitullah Mehsud and the dire humanitarian situation in camps for the internally displaced people from the conflict ridden areas under the militant control in Pakistan.
