Noref Report 1 Latin America's Political Economy Post 9/11

15 April 2009

Brief intro

The report - written by Augusto Varas - is the result of a cooperation between the Norwegian Latin America Research Network and Noref

Latin American countries are confronting and reacting to three main global changes and, at the same time, they are active parties in these changes. Not all states have been affected in the same way and consequences have not been the same as in developed countries.

During the last decade, Latin American countries reveal, in some cases, stronger states with regulatory institutions, welfare policies and new social and political contracts. However, in other countries, owing to economic crisis, the potential for social and political turmoil has increased. Weak regional institutions and fragmented international postures further exacerbate this risk. There is a new space for global confrontations in Latin America and future US – Latin America relations are unclear.

In this context, Latin American and Norwegian cooperation has the possibility to join forces in three main areas, the report concludes.
